Nuclear Communities in Transition Belarus project activities

by Alexei Nesterenko (ECOLINE Belarus)

Within the framework of the Nuclear Communities in Transition project ECOLINE made the first effort to raise the interest of Belarusian NGOs in energy issues. This was done by holding a working meeting of Belarusian and Lithuanian non governmental organizations (NGOs) in June, 2000 in Minsk, Belarus to discuss each country's energy needs and plans and to explore areas of common concern. These two nations share a border and use energy from the soon to be decommissioned Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania.

To be actively and productively involved in decision-making about energy issues, NGOs and the public need adequate information. To meet this need and encourage informed public participation on energy issues, ECOLINE launched an information service and electronic bulletin on energy issues in the fall of 2000. Also, Ecoline created and widely

At ECOLINE's June 2000 meeting of Lithuanian and Belarusian NGOs, experts, and government officials discussed nuclear power plant safety, as well as shared energy concerns and planning.

distributed a publication about different aspects of using of nuclear energy. The main idea of ECOLINE’s work is to prepare NGOs for working on energy related issues, as well as educating and informing citizens (especially young people) about the consequences of building a nuclear power plant in Belarus. ECOLINE is working in close connection with independent experts, governmental bodies and scientists in this work.
