Dear Ahmad:

In response to ISO/TC 207 documents N426 and N427, it is my pleasure to inform you that ANSI and its US/TAG for ISO/TC 207 unanimously support the formation of the NGO Task Group, as described in document N419, with the following comments:

Revise the third bullet and its related deliverable on page 2 of document N419 to read as follows:

Establishing an interface with the broader NGO community and enhancing communication, education and coordination within the NGO community (both internal and external to ISO/TC 207) and with ISO/TC 207.

Deliverable(s):
Conduct outreach through means such as web site content and workshops in order to promote NGO knowledge of and participation in the TC 207 process at the national and international levels.
Compile and report to TC 207 perspectives, questions and concerns received from NGOs outside of TC 207.

This new text will better describe and clarifie the intent of this bullet and deliverable, and this new text is acceptable to U.S. NGOs that participated in the development of document N419 in Stockholm.

Furthermore, as ISO/TC 207 decided to act on this proposal via a four-month letter ballot, appropriate changes must be made to the "Timeframe" section of document N419, should the results of the letter ballot be positive. ANSI suggests the following revised text:

The NGO Task Force will accomplish the terms of reference and deliverables listed above in a two-year time period starting on December 1, 2000. Between December 1, 2000 and June 1, 2001, all administrative organization of the NGO Task Group is expected to be completed so that it may hold its first meeting at the ISO/TC 207 meetings in Kuala Lumpur. ISO/TC 207 will review the status of the NGO Task Group's efforts at the June 2002 ISO/TC 207 plenary and decide whether to extend the existence of the NGO Task Group based on an evaluation of the value of this group and/or whether there is additional work to accomplish. If an extension is not granted, the NGO Task Group will provide its final report and deliverables to the ISO/TC 207 Secretary prior to the Autumn 2002 ISO/TC 207 CAG meeting.

Thank you for your consideration and registering this ANSI position, and please let me know if you have any questions.

My best regards,
Steven P. Cornish
